Managing Time = Managing Life

It is an old cliché that ‘time is money’. I would like to add that ‘time is life’! We all seem to be moving at a pace that often controls us instead of us controlling it. Coupled with technology, we are also available 24/7 and in ‘constant learning curves’ on how to use this technology to stay at the top of our productivity.

The question is: To what end?

I heard a story about a recent MBA graduate that traveled to Mexico and spent the week with a local fisherman deep-sea fishing. The fisherman worked from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm then took fiesta and went home for lunch and spend time with his wife and kids. He returned to work from 4:00 to 6:00 pm to finish up his day and see the sunset At the end of the week, the MBA suggested he consider building a fleet of boats and advertising his business. The fisherman asked what that would entail and the MBA answered: “You would take out a loan from the bank and work from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm every day for 20 years”. The fisherman said then what do I do? The MBA answered: “You will be rich so you can work from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm then take fiesta at home for lunch and spend time with your wife and kids. You can then return to work from 4:00 to 6:00 pm to finish up  our day and see the sunset”.

As professional salespeople, we have more flexibility than most. Coupled with this flexibility, we also work outside of regular business hours and often find ourselves working late into the evening in our home offices. The challenge for all of us is to how get more control of our time to ensure we are in control of our lifestyles.
